What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help individuals process and resolve distressing memories and experiences.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on how past experiences are stored in the brain and how they continue to influence present-day thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Through guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements), EMDR helps the brain:
Reprocess traumatic or distressing memories
Reduce emotional intensity associated with those memories
Shift negative beliefs (e.g., “I’m not safe” or “I’m not good enough”)
Build more adaptive, grounded perspectives
Over time, experiences that once felt overwhelming can become less distressing and more integrated.
How EMDR Therapy Can Help
EMDR is widely used to treat trauma, but it is also effective for a range of concerns, including:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and panic
Depression
Grief and loss
Childhood adversity
Relationship and attachment difficulties
Performance anxiety
Distressing or intrusive memories
Many clients seek EMDR when they feel “stuck” despite insight, or when talking about an experience alone has not led to meaningful change.
What to Expect in EMDR Therapy
EMDR is a structured process that unfolds over several phases, including:
1. Understanding Your History and Goals
Your therapist will take time to understand your experiences, symptoms, and goals for treatment.
2. Building Safety and Coping Skills
Before processing difficult memories, you will learn tools to help regulate emotions and feel grounded.
3. Reprocessing Distressing Experiences
Using bilateral stimulation, your therapist will guide you through processing specific memories in a safe and supported way.
4. Integration and Moving Forward
As distress decreases, you will begin to experience shifts in how you think, feel, and respond—both internally and in your daily life.
EMDR is collaborative, paced to your comfort, and tailored to your individual needs.
