Group Therapy

Group therapy offers a supportive and collaborative environment for personal growth and healing.

Group therapy is a powerful form of psychotherapy that can help you increase self-understanding and awareness, reduce loneliness and isolation, and enhance communication skills and abilities. In a group therapy setting, you can interact with a group of people who can provide support, understanding, encouragement, and feedback. Groups can be a critical aspect of treatment and can allow you to learn and grow through your relationships within the group and alongside your fellow group members.

Group Therapy in Manhattan

Group therapy typically consists of 5-12 members who are coming together because of a common life experience or challenge, or the need to develop certain skills or tools. Some of the most common topics for group therapy include:

  • Anxiety

  • Stress management

  • Social and communication problems

  • Depression

  • Eating disorders or Disordered Eating

  • Phobias

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship issues

  • Trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Attentional problems or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Group therapy can be a cost-effective form of treatment, as you are sharing the cost of therapy with the other members. It can also be a valuable addition to individual, family, or couples therapy, as it will allow you to get feedback on your thoughts, behaviors, and way of relating to others in a non-judgmental space. Additionally, group therapy allows you to experiment with different ways of relating to or behaving with other people prior to integrating it in your normal life. Group members serve as models for alternative ways of being, give information on the ways in which they have made changes and improved in areas that may relate to you, and provide you with opportunities to be altruistic with other group members.

Types of Groups

There are different types of therapy groups, which dictate the way a group is structured, organized, and led. Some of the most common types of therapy groups are:

Overthinking Everything? Here’s Why
Overthinking Everything? Here’s Why

Introduction You are lying in bed after a long day, ready to fall asleep. It’s finally quiet. Then your brain decides it’s the perfect time to replay that conversation you had this afternoon. Did your coworker seem annoyed? Should you have worded that text differently? Was that attempt at a joke awkward? Before you know it, you’re mentally revisiting a conversation that everyone else has probably forgotten. Then, your thoughts jump to tomorrow’s meeting, then to whether you’re making the...

What Is Childhood Emotional Neglect and How Does It Affect Adults?

Introduction Many people who experienced childhood emotional neglect don't describe their childhood as abusive or traumatic. Instead, they often say things like: "Nothing bad really happened." "My parents provided everything I needed." "I don't know why I struggle so much." When people think about childhood trauma, they often picture obvious experiences like abuse, major family conflict, or neglect of physical needs. Childhood emotional neglect is different. It is often defined less by what...
