Individual Therapy

What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy, sometimes called psychotherapy or talk therapy, is a one-on-one therapeutic relationship between you and a trained, licensed mental health professional. This process offers a confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors—helping you gain insight into your experiences and develop the skills to manage life’s challenges more effectively.

At Upper East Side Psychology, we offer therapy that is goal-oriented, supportive, and tailored to your unique needs. Whether you’re seeking treatment for a specific mental health concern or want to improve your self-awareness and relationships, we’re here to help.

Who Benefits from Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is for anyone looking to improve their quality of life, whether through symptom relief, emotional growth, or behavioral change. Some of the most common reasons people seek therapy include:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression or persistent low mood

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Eating disorders and disordered eating behaviors

  • Perfectionism and self-criticism

  • Low self-esteem or chronic self-doubt

  • Stress related to high-performance careers or academics

  • ADHD and executive functioning difficulties

  • Neurocognitive and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

  • Chronic Pain

  • Grief, loss, and life transitions

  • Relationship difficulties and interpersonal challenges

Whether you’re facing something new or have been struggling for years, therapy offers a supportive environment to help you heal, grow, and move forward.

Our Treatment Philosophy

We take an evidence-based, integrative approach to therapy—drawing on scientifically supported methods and customizing them to match your personality, goals, and presenting concerns. Therapy is collaborative, and we’ll work together to identify what’s working in your life, what’s holding you back, and what changes you’d like to see.

Our therapists are extensively trained in modalities such as:

Each session is designed to build insight, reduce distress, and help you feel more in control of your life.

Specialties and Areas of Focus

We specialize in treating a broad range of psychological concerns, including:

Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating

We offer specialized treatment for anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, as well as subclinical disordered eating patterns. Our clinicians are trained in CBT-E, FBT, and exposure-based approaches to help clients break free from rigid food rules, improve body image, and foster sustainable recovery.

Anxiety and OCD

Whether you’re struggling with generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, or obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors, we provide structured, skills-based interventions to help you reduce avoidance, tolerate uncertainty, and regain a sense of control.

Perfectionism and High-Achiever Stress

Many of our clients are professionals, students, athletes, and creatives who place immense pressure on themselves to succeed. We help individuals challenge self-critical thought patterns, manage burnout, and maintain high performance without compromising mental health.

Enhancing Performance and Visualization

Whether you're an athlete, artist, student, or professional in a high-pressure field, therapy can help you optimize your performance and stay mentally sharp. At Upper East Side Psychology, we use evidence-based techniques such as guided visualization, cognitive restructuring, and mindfulness to improve focus, reduce performance anxiety, and build mental resilience. Visualization strategies can be especially powerful for achieving goals, preparing for high-stakes events, and reinforcing a confident mindset. Through individualized support, we help you unlock your full potential—both in performance and in life.

ADHD and Executive Functioning

We support adolescents and adults with attention challenges, procrastination, and difficulty with organization, time management, or follow-through. Therapy can help you understand your brain, improve focus, and create sustainable routines that support your goals.

Self-Esteem, Identity, and Personal Growth

Therapy can help you gain clarity about your values, strengthen your self-concept, and work through internal conflicts that affect your confidence and relationships.

Therapy provides a nurturing space to support your healing, growth, and progress, whether you're encountering new challenges or have been dealing with issues for years.
